Getting there
Fly Sucre (SRE)
Alcantari airport sits 30km from town. Direct hops from La Paz and Santa Cruz make this the softest arrival in Bolivia.
Bus from Potosi
Around 3 hours downhill on a paved road. The easiest and most common overland link, and a welcome drop in altitude.
Overnight bus from La Paz
Roughly 12 hours. Cama buses run nightly, but check whether any road blockades are active before you commit.
When to go
Best time to go
April to October: dry, mild days and the city's famous clear light.
Cheapest months
November to February, when the rain arrives and student term slows down.
Priciest & busiest
Around Phujllay in March and independence week in early August.
If you've got one day
Morning
Coffee on Plaza 25 de Mayo, then Casa de la Libertad before the tour groups arrive around eleven.
Late morning
Walk up to La Recoleta for the cloister and a viewpoint over the whole white grid of rooftops.
Lunch
A set almuerzo in the Mercado Central, then a papaya and orange juice from the stalls upstairs.
Afternoon
Taxi out to Cal Orck'o for the dinosaur tracks, or stay central for the ASUR textile museum.
Evening
Dinner around Plaza 25 de Mayo, then the bars on Calle Ortiz where the students go.
Nearby & day trips
Tarabuco Sunday market
Two hours away, a Yampara weaving market where locals still wear montera helmets. Sundays only, so leave early.
Maragua Crater
A day or two of hiking through a geological bowl of tilted rock, with dinosaur tracks and village homestays.
