PICK YOUR BASE
Everything worth seeing sits inside twenty steep blocks, so the choice is how far uphill you will walk at 4,067m — and whether the room has any heating.
The colonial centre
Within a few blocks of the mint, the churches and most of the restaurants, in buildings that are handsome and, more often than not, unheated. It is also the flattest ground in the city, which matters more here than it sounds.

Calle Bustillos and the market blocks
The cheapest beds, right beside the Mercado Central, so breakfast is downstairs and the trading noise starts around seven. Sensible if you are here two nights and a mine tour.

Out by the new terminal
The Nueva Terminal is away from the centre; city minibuses run there for Bs 3 and a taxi is Bs 8–10 by day or Bs 12–15 at night. A bed out here only makes sense for a pre-dawn departure.

Ask about heating before you book
Potosí is the coldest of Bolivia's big cities and winter nights drop below freezing. Plenty of cheap rooms have no heating at all and a high colonial ceiling makes it worse, so ask specifically about a heater or extra blankets rather than assuming.
