The stronger of the city's two División Profesional sides plays at the Estadio Víctor Agustín Ugarte, about 3,890m up and one of the highest professional grounds anywhere. Check the federation's fixture list before you plan a weekend around a match.

Real Potosí is also in the top flight and shares the same 29,210-capacity stadium, rebuilt and renamed in 2008, so in most weeks of the season one of the two is at home. A city of about 240,000 with two first-division clubs is unusual anywhere.

Twenty-two artificial reservoirs were built above the city to drive the water that powered 140 ore mills, and the dams and aqueducts are part of what UNESCO lists. Walking up to them is the local high-altitude outing — go early and with someone who knows the way.

Centuries of tunnelling have left the mountain porous and unstable and parts of its summit have already collapsed, which is why UNESCO put Potosí on its World Heritage in Danger list in 2014. Take the guided mine visit if you want to; do not treat the hill as a summit.

The national pedestrian and cyclist day falls on the first Sunday of September — 6 September in 2026 — and motor traffic stops across the country under the 2011 law. In a city this steep, at this height, the cyclists are the ones to admire.
