WITH KIDS
Not an obvious family city — the altitude does most of the deciding — but the municipality runs several small, cheap places that work well with young children.

Pipiripi
The municipal interactive space for children in the Parque Urbano Central, open Wednesday to Sunday, with workshops, games and, since April 2026, a room built around the wildlife of the Auquisamaña valley. Schools and organised groups book ahead; families can turn up.
Parque Mirador Laikakota
Municipal park on Avenida del Ejército above the centre, open 09:00–18:00 Tuesday to Friday and to 18:30 at weekends, Bs 3.50 for adults and Bs 1 for children. Room to run about, plus the view down the canyon towards Illimani.
Bioparque Vesty Pakos, Mallasa
The municipal zoo, out in the warmer valley below the city: more than 520 rescued animals across about 70 species, including the Andean jucumari bear. Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–15:00; Bs 10 for adults, Bs 5 for ages 5 to 11, free under 5 and over 60.
Jardín Botánico, Miraflores
Four hectares between Calle Nicaragua and Lucas Jaimes with three greenhouses, an aquarium and a lot of cactus, open Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–18:00 for Bs 3 adults and Bs 1 children. Nothing is sold inside, so bring water and something to eat.
Altitude, with children
Children take altitude as badly as adults and are worse at explaining it. Slow first day, plenty of water, nothing uphill in a hurry — and if a child is unwell, dropping the 400m to Zona Sur is the quickest useful thing you can do without leaving the city.
