EAT LIKE A LOCAL
Eating here runs on markets and mid-morning snacks; the sit-down dinner is the exception rather than the rule.

Mercado Lanza
The old covered market beside Plaza San Francisco, rebuilt between 2008 and 2010 for more than a thousand traders. Stalls do salteñas, relleno de carne, anticuchos and api con pastel; entry is free and it runs 07:00–21:00 Monday to Saturday and 08:00–17:00 on Sunday.
Mercado Rodríguez
The street produce market in San Pedro where much of the city actually shops, spilling over several blocks with vegetables, fruit, chicken and pork. It is a working market rather than somewhere to sit down; go for the stalls and the fruit.
Plaza Avaroa and the Sopocachi streets
The part of town paceños go out to eat in rather than shop in. Most of the city's proper restaurants are within a few blocks of the plaza, and they serve later than anything in the centre.

The mid-morning salteña
The salteña is a juicy baked pasty eaten standing up between about nine and noon, alongside api con pastel — hot purple maize with a fried pastry. Both are market food and both are made in a fixed quantity: when the stall sells out, it shuts.
