Blessing of the vehicles
Cars decked in flowers are blessed with beer and confetti outside the basilica, most mornings and busiest at weekends.

Boat to Isla del Sol
Ferries leave the pier around 08:30 and 13:30. The south, with Yumani and the Inca steps, is the reliably open half.

Climb Cerro Calvario
Fourteen stations of the cross up a steep hill above town, timed for sunset over the lake. Take it slowly at 3,815m.

Trucha on the lakefront
Rows of stalls grill Titicaca trout to order along Avenida 6 de Agosto by the water. Cheap and consistently good.

Getting there
Bus from La Paz
Around 4 hours, including the Tiquina strait crossing where passengers ferry over separately from the bus. Daylight only.
Bus from Puno, Peru
Three hours to the Kasani border and on to Copacabana. Straightforward, but keep valuables close at the crossing.
Boat from Isla del Sol
Ferries run back to Copacabana from Yumani in about 90 minutes. Buy the return leg when you first go out.
When to go
Best time to go
May to September: dry, sharp light on the lake and calmer crossings.
Cheapest months
November to March, wet afternoons but green hills and empty guesthouses.
Priciest & busiest
Early February and the first week of August, when pilgrims fill every bed.

Morning
Early ferry to Isla del Sol's southern end, climbing the Inca steps up to Yumani from the jetty.
Late morning
Walk the ridge trail for lake views, paying the small community fees at the checkpoints in cash.
Lunch
Trout and quinoa soup at a Yumani guesthouse looking out over the water towards Peru.
Afternoon
Afternoon ferry back to Copacabana, then the basilica and its whitewashed courtyard.
Evening
Up Cerro Calvario for sunset, then grilled trout on the lakefront as the cold comes in.
Nearby & day trips
Isla de la Luna
Smaller and far quieter than Isla del Sol, with an Inca temple for chosen women. Often sold as a combined trip.
Copacabana to Yampupata
A 17km lakeside walk to the peninsula's tip, where rowing boats cross to Isla del Sol. Flat, gorgeous, rarely busy.
