PICK YOUR BASE
Leuven is small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes, so the bases differ mainly in how much late-night noise you are willing to sleep above.
Binnenstad — Grote Markt and Oude Markt
The historic core around the town hall, St Peter's and the university buildings. Everything is on your doorstep, but the Oude Markt is a single square lined end to end with bars and it stays loud well past midnight, so ask which way your window faces.

Stationsbuurt — cheapest beds, ten minutes in
The blocks around Leuven station, including the Martelarenlaan side. Useful if you are day-tripping to Brussels or Antwerp, cheaper than the centre, and the walk into the Grote Markt is about ten minutes down Bondgenotenlaan.

Vaartkom — the converted brewery docks
The old Stella Artois industrial basin, now flats, cafés and the De Hoorn creative hub, with the Sluispark on the water. It is 1.1 km from the station and 1.5 km from the centre, quiet at night, and a free weekend shuttle runs from the Vaartkom car park to the centre.

Practical tip: Leuven as a base, not Brussels
Trains from Brussels reach Leuven in around 25 minutes, so people often day-trip in. Reversing that works better in summer — beds are cheaper here than in central Brussels, the town is safe and walkable late, and weekend train fares are discounted 30–40%.
