Citadel of Dinant
Cable car or 408 steps up the cliff to a fortress of tunnels, a war museum and the classic view down the river.

Getting there

Train from Brussels
About 90 minutes, changing at Namur. The Namur-Dinant leg runs beside the Meuse, so take a window seat.
Train from Namur
Half an hour south on a regular local service, following the river almost the entire way down.
Drive from Brussels
Roughly an hour and 45 minutes by car, which also opens up the Lesse valley and the Ardennes villages.

Best time to go
May to September, when kayaks, cable car and river cruises are all running
Cheapest months
November to March, though several riverside businesses shut for winter
Priciest & busiest
July and August weekends, plus the Belgian school holidays

If you've got one day

Morning
Walk the Meuse quays, then the Collegiate Church before taking the cable car up to the citadel.
Late morning
Citadel tunnels, the artillery terrace and the panorama looking straight down onto the church dome.
Lunch
Flamiche cheese tart, or a river-view terrace lunch along Rue Adolphe Sax below the cliff.
Afternoon
Maison Leffe for the abbey beer story, or a Meuse boat cruise downstream towards Anseremme.
Evening
Dinner and a Leffe on the quayside, with the citadel and church floodlit above the black water.
