ON A BUDGET
A flat-fare bus network, public beaches by law and a Friday fish fry — Barbados is workable cheaply.
Turquoise water on the Barbados coast
Sleep in Worthing
The south coast between Worthing and Rockley has the island's cheap guesthouses and apartments, on the boardwalk and a short bus ride from Bridgetown.
What a day costs
The Barbados dollar is fixed at two to the US dollar. Bed BBD 60–120, food BBD 45–90 on fish cutters and rotis, buses BBD 7. Reckon $65–115.
Getting around cheap
Blue government buses, yellow private buses and white ZR vans all charge one flat fare across the island, running from the two Bridgetown terminals.
Free by day
Every beach is public: the Rockley to Accra boardwalk, the surf at Bathsheba, and the Garrison Savannah's ring of colonial barracks.
Oistins fish fry
The fishing town's Friday night grill-up is the island's social fixture — plastic chairs, marlin and flying fish, and dancing in the car park.
