Sixty-six steps cut out of solid limestone in 1794, climbing through a shaded ravine from downtown Nassau up to Fort Fincastle. It is the walking route to the high ground above the town rather than a long visit, and it takes about as long as it sounds.

Bahamian art in a colonial house at West and West Hill Street, with an art park attached and a programme of guided tours and workshops for adults as well as children. Bahamian residents get in free on Sundays; call 242-328-5800 to check current hours before you walk over.

Four acres on Chippingham Road with more than 135 animals, built around the Caribbean flamingos that are the national bird, and their flamingo show is included with entry. Tortoise feeding at 11.30am and rabbit feeding at 2.30pm cost $5 a person on top; under-twos are free.

Eleven acres holding around 170 species of rare palms, one of the largest collections of exotic palms anywhere, run by the Bahamas National Trust. Shaded, quiet and rarely crowded — the opposite of the cruise-terminal end of town.
