Pinzgau farm cooking with a resort mark-up: cheese dumplings, dumpling soup and Kaiserschmarrn up the mountain, and a couple of serious kitchens down in the valley.
Steinerwirt 1493
An inn in the centre of Zell am See trading since 1493, now cooking modern Austrian. Open daily 12pm–10pm with the kitchen running to 9.45pm, which is unusually long for the town.
MAYER'S Restaurant, Schloss Prielau
The area's fine-dining address, in a small castle on the northern lakeshore just outside town, holding two Michelin stars and three Gault Millau toques. Book well ahead and check which nights it opens — it does not run every evening.
Kaprun's main street
Where you eat if you are staying on the mountain side: the same Austrian menus as Zell am See, generally a euro or two cheaper, and far easier to get a table at 7pm in February.
Pinzgauer Kasnocken
The regional plate to order: small flour dumplings baked with sour mountain cheese and fried onions, usually with a green salad on the side. It appears at hut altitude as well as in the valley and is normally the cheapest filling thing on the menu.
