Up to 1,965m for a ring of thirty three-thousanders with the lake below. Lifts run daily through the summer season.

Lake Zell boat trip
Electric boats loop the lake from the Esplanade in summer. Free lidos ring the shore and the water reaches about 23C.

Sigmund Thun Klamm, Kaprun
A boardwalk threaded through a gorge carved by glacier meltwater, 20 minutes away by bus. Summer season only.

Grossglockner High Alpine Road
Early May to early November, 36 hairpins to 2,504m. Gates from 6am, last entry 45 minutes before the night closure.

Getting there
Train from Salzburg
About 90 minutes on the regional line through the Pinzgau, with no changes, ending a two-minute walk from the lake.
Fly Salzburg (SZG) or Munich
Salzburg is 90 minutes on by train or transfer. Munich adds around two hours but usually costs noticeably less.
Pinzgauer Lokalbahn
A narrow-gauge branch line runs west from Zell am See towards Krimml, with bike carriages through the summer.

Best time to go
July-August for lake swimming, or February-March for reliable snow.
Cheapest months
Late April to early June, and October-November between the seasons.
Priciest & busiest
Christmas to early January, and the February ski half-terms.

Morning
First cable car up the Kitzsteinhorn from Kaprun, for the Gipfelwelt 3000 platforms before the cloud builds.
Late morning
Walk the National Park gallery tunnel through the mountain, then ride back down on the 3K K-onnection.
Lunch
Back in Zell am See, lunch on the Esplanade with the lake in front and the Schmittenhoehe behind you.
Afternoon
Swim off one of the free lidos, or take the electric boat around the lake and walk the shore path home.
Evening
Gin at Ginhouse, then live music at Villa Crazy Daisy or a hand of blackjack at the casino on the Esplanade.

Krimml Waterfalls
Europe's highest falls, 380m in three tiers, an hour west by the Pinzgau railway. The WasserWelten park runs May to October.
Kaprun high mountain reservoirs
The Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden dams above Kaprun, reached by bus and inclined lift, with guided dam tours into October.
