PICK YOUR BASE
Vienna's bases differ mostly in how much imperial stage-set you want outside the door and how much you are willing to pay for it, because the U-Bahn flattens every distance anyway.
Innere Stadt — the postcard core
The 1st district inside the Ringstraße: St. Stephen's, the Hofburg, the state opera and the coffee houses, all walkable. It is the most expensive place to sleep in the city and it empties of residents after office hours, so evenings feel quieter than the address suggests.

Neubau and Mariahilf — the 6th and 7th
The strip either side of Mariahilfer Straße, with the Spittelberg lanes, the MuseumsQuartier at one end and the Naschmarkt at the southern edge. Best mix of price, restaurants and late opening; U3 and U4 both run through it and you can walk into the 1st in fifteen minutes.

Leopoldstadt — the 2nd, over the canal
One stop from the centre but noticeably cheaper, with the Prater, the Augarten and the Karmelitermarkt as the local anchors. Good if you want a residential neighbourhood and a park you can run in; less good if you want everything on your doorstep at 2am.

Practical: stay inside the Gürtel
A 24-hour Wiener Linien ticket is €9.70 and a 7-day digital ticket €25.20, so an outer-district room is only a bargain if the nightly saving beats that. Note that the 48- and 72-hour tickets were withdrawn on 1 January 2026, so for a long weekend the choice is now day tickets or the weekly.
