Getting there
Fly Vienna (VIE)
The City Airport Train reaches Wien Mitte in 16 minutes; the S7 suburban train takes 25 for about a third of the price.
Railjet from Salzburg
OeBB Railjets run roughly hourly and take about 2h20. Book Sparschiene fares early on oebb.at for the cheapest seats.
Nightjet sleeper from Europe
OeBB night trains link Vienna with Hamburg, Paris, Rome and Zurich. Book a couchette or private cabin well in advance.

May-June and September: warm, long evenings, museums calm, terraces open.
Cheapest months
January-March once ball season ends. Cold and grey, but hotels halve.
Priciest & busiest
December Christmas markets and New Year concerts. Book six months out.
If you've got one day
Morning
Start at Stephansdom, then walk the Graben and Kohlmarkt to the Hofburg while the old town is still quiet.
Late morning
Cross to the Kunsthistorisches Museum or the Albertina. Pick one, not both, and give it two unhurried hours.
Lunch
A sausage eaten standing up at Bitzinger by the Albertina, or something longer at a Naschmarkt stall.
Afternoon
Tram D out to the Upper Belvedere for Klimt, then wander the terraced gardens down to the Lower Belvedere.
Evening
Standing-room tickets at the Staatsoper for a few euros, then a classic cocktail at Loos American Bar.

Wachau Valley by train and boat
90 minutes west: Melk Abbey, terraced vineyards, Duernstein. Train to Melk, boat downstream, train home from Krems.
Bratislava in an hour
Cheap OeBB trains and Twin City Liner catamarans reach Slovakia's capital for a very different, cheaper night out.
