THINGS TO DO
The things worth doing in Salzburg, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
Aerial view of Salzburg old town along the Salzach River
Hohensalzburg Fortress
The city's landmark since 1077, never taken by siege. Ride the FestungsBahn up, walk the ramparts, walk back down.
Mirabell Gardens
Free and open daily, with the Do-Re-Mi staircase and the fortress framed at the end of the axis. Go at 8am.
Petersfriedhof and catacombs
Wrought-iron graves against the Moenchsberg cliff, with early Christian chambers cut into the rock above them.
Kapuzinerberg hill walk
A steep wooded path from Linzergasse to a hilltop monastery. Free, quiet, and the finest view over the old town roofs.
Hellbrunn trick fountains
A prince-archbishop's practical jokes, still working after 400 years. You will get wet. Season runs March to November.
