SPORT & SEASON
Salzburg does have a top-flight club, and then some: the two Red Bull teams are the serious spectator sport here, while everything else is about the mountains that start ten minutes outside the city.

FC Red Bull Salzburg at the Red Bull Arena
The dominant force in the Austrian Bundesliga in recent years, with regular European group-stage football. The Red Bull Arena is outside the city proper, so allow for a bus or tram out rather than a walk from the old town; tickets go through the club's own shop.
EC Red Bull Salzburg at the Eisarena
The city's ice-hockey side, playing in the win2day ICE Hockey League and regularly in the Champions Hockey League. Winter fixtures, an indoor arena and cheaper tickets than the football — a reliable cold-evening option when the mountain weather has closed in.
Salzburg Marathon
Race week runs 16–23 May 2027 with the main races on the Sunday. The start is on the Staatsbrücke over the Salzach and every distance finishes on Max-Reinhardt-Platz in the old town. Marathon, half, 10K city run, a 5.5K women's race, a relay and a junior marathon.
Untersbergbahn
The cable car up the Untersberg from the valley station at Dr.-Friedrich-Ödl-Weg 2 in St. Leonhard near Grödig, a short bus ride south of the city. It is the standard access for hiking and, in winter, ski touring and snowshoeing on the massif; climbers and paragliders use it too.
Ski amadé — the winter hinterland
Austria's largest linked lift network spreads south and east of Salzburg across five regions — Schladming-Dachstein, Gastein, Hochkönig, Grossarltal and the 12 Peaks — with up to 760 km of piste and 260 lifts. Gastein and Schladming are the practical day-trip ends of it from the city by train.
