SIESTA TO FIESTA

Salzburg

EUROPE · SIESTA SIDE
Mozart, Baroque domes and a fortress on a crag, wedged between the Salzach and the Alps. Small enough to walk, rich enough for a week.
Aerial view of Salzburg old town along the Salzach River

The plan

Hohensalzburg Fortress
Europe's largest intact medieval fortress. Funicular up from Festungsgasse; open 8.30am-8pm May to September.
Mozart's Birthplace
Getreidegasse 9, where he was born in 1756. Daily 9am-5.30pm, and 8.30am-7pm in July and August. Adults €18.
DomQuartier circuit
One ticket links the Residenz state rooms, the cathedral museum and St Peter's. Daily except Tuesday, 10am-5pm.
Hellbrunn trick fountains
1615 water-jokes that still soak visitors, plus the Sound of Music gazebo. Daily 28 March to 1 November; bus 25.
Getreidegasse and the yards
Wrought-iron guild signs above the shops, and covered passageways cutting through to the river. Best before 9am.

Getting there

Fly Salzburg (SZG)
Bus 2 or 10 reaches the old town in about 20 minutes. Munich Airport is 90 minutes away by coach and often cheaper.
Railjet from Vienna
Roughly hourly, about 2h20, straight into Salzburg Hauptbahnhof. Cheapest on OeBB Sparschiene booked weeks ahead.
Train or bus from Munich
Under two hours across the border. A Bayern-Ticket covers regional trains from Munich at a low group fare.

When to go

Best time to go
Late May to June, or September: alpine light without the festival price spike.
Cheapest months
November and early spring. Rain likely, hotels cheap, museums empty.
Priciest & busiest
Late July to August during the Festival, and Advent market weekends.

If you've got one day

Morning
Walk Getreidegasse before 9am with the guild signs to yourself, then Mozart's Birthplace right at opening.
Late morning
Funicular up to Hohensalzburg. Do the ramparts loop for the Alps panorama before the interior museums.
Lunch
Augustiner Braeustuebl in Muelln: rinse your own stone mug, fill it from the cask, buy food from the stalls.
Afternoon
The DomQuartier circuit, or bus 25 out to Hellbrunn for the trick fountains and the palace park.
Evening
Mirabell Gardens at dusk, dinner in the old town, then a nightcap on the Steinterrasse rooftop across the river.

Nearby & day trips

Untersberg cable car
Bus 25 to St Leonhard near Groedig, then a cable car to 1,776m for a Salzburg-and-Bavaria panorama.
Berchtesgaden and Koenigssee
Bus 840 over the German border to an electric boat down an emerald fjord to St Bartholomae. Bring your passport.
