PICK YOUR BASE
Almost everyone leaves the same afternoon they arrive, so the only real decision is whether you sleep inside the village at a premium or a few minutes down the lake for half the price.
Hallstatt Markt — the postcard lanes
The narrow core around Marktplatz, where the lake-facing rooms and the old inns are. You get the village to yourself at 7am and 9pm and you pay heavily for it; there are only a few dozen beds and they go months ahead.

Lahn — the southern end
Five minutes along the shore, where the bus terminus, the salt-mine funicular and the village grocery are. Less photogenic, considerably more practical, and generally cheaper than the Markt.

Obertraun — the far end of the lake
Ten minutes by bus or train, with the Dachstein cable car and the caves on its doorstep and a proper grass beach on the water. Rooms cost noticeably less; check the last bus back, it is early.

Bad Goisern or the station side — practical tip
Hallstatt's railway station sits on the opposite shore and is reached only by the little ferry. Bad Goisern, two stops up the line, is a working town with working prices, and commuting in by train costs far less than a room in the village.
