Hallstatt has no senior club worth travelling for. The closest Bundesliga side is FC Red Bull Salzburg at the Red Bull Arena in Wals-Siezenheim, roughly an hour and a half away by car, or a train to Salzburg plus a local bus.

The Dachstein Krippenstein area above Obertraun is known for off-piste and freeriding rather than groomed motorway runs, and it is deliberately small. Same cable car that serves the caves in summer.

One of Europe's bigger mountain-bike marathons, based in Bad Goisern fifteen minutes up the valley; the 2026 edition is on 18 July. Routes run from 21.8km to a 202km extreme distance, with a gravel marathon and a junior race alongside.

The path from the Markt up the Salzbergtal to the mine is a steep 45–60 minutes and costs nothing, and it carries on onto the Plassen and the high pastures above. Longer days go up the Hoher Sarstein from the Steeg side for the view straight down the lake.

A lakeside cycle route links Hallstatt, Obertraun and Bad Goisern, mostly flat and largely off the main road, and it is the easiest way to see the shore without a car. Bicycles cross on the ferry for €4.
