EAT LIKE A LOCAL
A village of a few hundred people with perhaps a dozen kitchens, all of which fill at midday with day-trippers; the thing worth ordering is fish out of the lake in front of you.
Lake fish — Reinanke and Saibling
Whitefish and char from the Hallstättersee turn up on almost every menu here, usually grilled whole with butter and parsley. It is the one thing on the card that is genuinely local rather than trucked in for the coaches.

Bräugasthof Hallstatt
An old brewery inn on the waterfront with a terrace out over the lake, doing Austrian standards and the local fish. Either book or turn up outside the 12–2pm crush.

Seewirt Zauner
The Zauner family's hotel restaurant on Marktplatz, the village's long-standing address for a proper sit-down dinner and where most people end up once the day boats have gone.

Self-catering from the Lahn grocery
Restaurant prices here reflect a captive audience. The village's grocery shop is down at the Lahn end, and for a stay of more than one night a bag of shopping eaten on the lakeside benches beats a third plate of fish.
