Salzwelten Hallstatt salt mine
The world's oldest salt mine, worked for 7,000 years. Reopened 29 August 2026 with a rebuilt funicular. €49 with the cable car.

Skywalk World Heritage View
A platform cantilevered 350m above the village and lake. Same funicular as the mine, and now with lift access.

Beinhaus charnel house
Around 1,200 painted and dated skulls stacked in a chapel by the parish church: flowers for women, ivy for men.

Cross the lake on the Stefanie
Ten minutes from the station pier with the village rising out of the water ahead of you. €4 single, €8 return, all year.

Stay the night
The day crowds vanish around 5pm. An overnight buys you sunset, an empty Marktplatz and the lake completely still at dawn.
Getting there
Train and ferry from Salzburg
Change at Attnang-Puchheim for Hallstatt station, then the Stefanie ferry across the lake. €4 single, and it meets the trains.
Bus 542 from Bad Ischl
Postbus runs along the lakeshore into the village itself. Slower than the ferry, but no boat and it drops you at Lahn.
Driving in
Cars are barred from the centre. Use the numbered P lots on the approach road and walk in; coach parking must be pre-booked.
When to go
Best time to go
May-June and late September: green, warm, and the coach traffic thins.
Cheapest months
November to March outside Christmas. Cold, dark, empty and cheap.
Priciest & busiest
July and August, plus Christmas and New Year in the village.
If you've got one day
Morning
Arrive before 9am. Walk the lakeside path from Lahn up to Marktplatz while the village is still more or less yours.
Late morning
Funicular up the Salzberg for the Skywalk platform, then the salt mine tour and its wooden miners' slide.
Lunch
Back down for lake trout on a terrace: Braeugasthof on Seestrasse, or the Seeterrasse at Seehotel Gruener Baum.
Afternoon
The Beinhaus skulls, then a pedalo or a swim off the Badeinsel. Coaches start pulling out around four o'clock.
Evening
Dinner at Seewirt Zauner, then a beer at Marktbeisl Zur Ruth. That really is the whole of Hallstatt's nightlife.
Nearby & day trips
Dachstein Krippenstein, Obertraun
Cable car up to the 5fingers viewing platform and the Giant Ice Cave. Ten minutes round the lake by bus or boat.
Gosausee and Bad Ischl
The Gosau lakes mirror the Dachstein glacier; Bad Ischl is the old imperial spa town, and good for cake.
