THINGS TO DO
Sydney's best hours are outdoors and free — the coast walk, the harbour and the botanic garden — and the two things worth paying for, the Opera House tour and the bridge pylon, mostly buy you a view back at the rest of it.
Sydney Harbour Bridge across the bay
Sydney Opera House tour
Guided tours go inside the building at Bennelong Point in several versions: the standard house tour, a mobility-access tour, an architectural tour, a backstage tour, and tour-and-dine or tasting combinations. Book ahead online; the cheaper alternative is simply buying a ticket to whatever is on that evening.
Bondi to Coogee coastal walk
Six kilometres of clifftop path starting at the southern end of Bondi Beach and finishing at Coogee, about two hours at a steady pace. Easy to medium with one steep section and a lot of steps; it passes Waverley Cemetery, and the Bondi–Tamarama stretch hosts Sculpture by the Sea each spring. Cafes the whole way and buses back along the coast.
Royal Botanic Garden Sydney
Free, entered from Mrs Macquaries Road and open daily from 7am to sunset — 5.30pm in August, 6pm in September. It wraps around Farm Cove from the Opera House to Mrs Macquaries Point, with a fernery, wildflower meadow and rockery views back to the bridge, plus a digital guide in more than 50 languages and First Nations-led tours.
Art Gallery of New South Wales
Two buildings in the Domain about 15 minutes' walk from the city centre: Naala Nura, holding the Grand Courts, library and children's art library, and Naala Badu. Open daily 10am–5pm and until 10pm on Wednesdays, closed Christmas Day and Good Friday. General entry is free; some exhibitions charge.
BridgeMuseum in the Harbour Bridge pylon
The lookout and museum inside the south-east pylon of the Harbour Bridge. Get there from Cumberland Street in The Rocks, opposite the Glenmore Hotel, by lift or stairs, then walk about 300m north along the pedestrian footpath — allow ten minutes. Far cheaper than BridgeClimb for much the same view.
