Rugby league is the code here, and the water sports run year-round outside the wet season.
Cairns Taipans basketball
The national league side plays at the Cairns Convention Centre from October to March; the arena is small enough that the cheap seats still see everything.
Rugby league at Barlow Park
Northern Pride play the Queensland Cup from March to September, and NRL clubs bring a premiership game north most seasons.
Ironman Cairns
The long-course triathlon swims off Palm Cove and rides the Captain Cook Highway in June, in the dry season, with a shorter race the same weekend.
Diving and reef sailing
Liveaboard dive courses and Low Isles sailing trips run all year, but the calmest water and clearest visibility come between August and December.
