WITH KIDS
Reef, rainforest and a stinger-free lagoon — Cairns is a family base where crocodiles are taken seriously.
Coral reef in the Great Barrier Reef
Esplanade Lagoon
A free, lifeguarded saltwater pool on the seafront with shallow ends and shade sails — the only safe swim in the town itself. All ages.
Great Barrier Reef day trip
Pontoon boats from the marina carry glass-bottom boats and shallow snorkelling for non-swimmers; the crossing can be rough, so dose accordingly. Ages 5+.
Kuranda Skyrail and railway
Cable car over the rainforest canopy one way and a heritage train back through the gorge, with a village and a bird park between. Ages 4+.
Hartley's Crocodile Adventures
Forty minutes north, boat cruises on a lagoon of saltwater crocodiles plus koalas, cassowaries and snake talks; half a day, well shaded. Ages 3+.
Stingers, crocs and wet season
Never swim in rivers, estuaries or unpatrolled beaches. Box jellyfish season runs roughly November to May, when only netted enclosures and the lagoon are safe.
